- I teach seventh grade English and I've always been a reader. I'll read just about anything, though I most enjoy fiction. I love knitting, playing the guitar (I'm just learning), hanging with my kids, and talking books with my friends and my students.
Reading Level Codes
This is a short-hand method for explaining the reading level of the books I've read. It's not meant to be a definitive analysis, just a quick reference.
YA (Young Adult): this style of writing is appropriate for 5th or 6th grade readers and up, there may be occasional profanity, but it should be pretty mild.
MYA (Mature Young Adult): these books usually contain more mature content and a higher reading comprehension level- sometimes including scenes of explicit sexuality and/or profanity.
A/YA (Adult/Young Adult): this category describes books that were really written for adults, but are great for seventh grade readers too.
A/MYA (Adult/Mature Young Adult): these books were written for adults, but will probably also appeal to mature young adult readers too. See MYA category above.
A (Adult): please trust that if I have labeled a book or author this way, I'm serious about it being a book that will either make more sense or be more fun for older readers. I read Jane Eyre in 7th grade and loved it, but Crime and Punishment made lots more sense when I was in high school and college.
I'm happy to chat about the labels I've chosen and whether you agree with me. Just don't come pick a fight with me about what you're ready or not ready to read. That's up to you [and your parents].

I'm splitting my time between reading "The Duke's Children" by Trollope (almost done with the Palliser series!) and the evolution textbook I'll be teaching from in 6 weeks. Really only 6 weeks? Cripes...
Just cracked open "American Gods" by Gaiman on the bus ride down to New York yesterday. Figured I'd read that before I got into "Anansi's Boys" (ahem, a signed copy, by the way). Neil and I are boyfriend/girlfriend now.
don't read much. hurts my brain.
Let's see, over the weekend I knocked off "A Song for Arbonne" by Guy Gavriel Kay (I'm having quite the affair with him now -his women are fierce and complex and he gets that love is pain and almost never works out), "Wee Free Men" by Terry Pratchett (what can I say - I nearly wee'd myself laughing) and "The Blade Itself" by Joe Abercrombie (good, good fun but lots of blood and guts).
As you can imagine, I spent alot of time sitting on my butt with my face in a book over the weekend. I even ate my meals out so as not to have to spend time cooking that could have been spent reading.
